Vulture Hide Photography

Eurasian Griffon Vultures by Dimiter Georgiev

For vulture photography we use a fixed hide located in the Eastern Rhodope Mountains, south-eastern Bulgaria. It is a mountain of rolling hillsides alternating with rugged landscape of jagged peaks, towering cliffs and sparsely vegetated, boulder-strewn slopes. Exceptional biodiversity – a result of the impact of the Mediterranean and continental climate – is concentrated in a small area. The region holds the only wild populations of the Eurasian Griffon Vulture and the Eurasian Black Vulture in Bulgaria. About 3/4 of the fragile Balkan population of the Egyptian Vulture also breed in the Eastern Rhodopes. Here we support the local vulture populations by regularly bringing carcass to a feeding site. The vulture photography hide is established in front of the feeding site.
